Author Brené Brown explains that shame appears during difficult conversations because we believe that we are simply not worthy and we are terrified that others might judge us if they see our authentic selves. The nature of shame is that we don’t want to talk about it, but by locking away our shame we give it permission to prevent us from living fuller lives. Sharing stories of shame with people helps us understand that we are not alone in our thoughts.

As a visual designer, I am considering the potential of vulnerability by openly discussing thoughts and memories that have brought me shame. Honoring those unexpressed thoughts and honest memories through black and white ink releases the power of shame over me. Through visual narratives, I am raising awareness about the importance of sharing and transforming stories as a form of self-care.
